Bill White '60 shares Temple Street story

Temple Street alumnus Bill White '60 addressed students about the Temple Street legacy, how Saint John's shaped his life, and how every student, past and present, is a founder of generations to come.

As part of Founders Hall Dedication week, Bill White - who served as teacher, coach, Academic Dean, and Alumni Director at Saint John's in Shrewsbury for 44 years - shared his unique story with students of today. The newly constructed Founders Hall is dedicated to the original Xaverian Brothers and thousands of Temple Street alumni who laid the groundwork for the Saint John's that thrives today.

While much has changed in the brick and mortar of Saint John's High School, the values and mission have remained constant.

Students heard the story of Mr. White's initial hesitation to go to the all-boys, inner-city private school in the mid-1950s that morphed into lifelong pride in the institution that shaped his mind, heart, and career. He spoke of the lasting friendships with students and teachers alike, and revealed stories of the Brothers' unfortgettable classes and lunch hour on the oaved schoolyard.

While he and his friends were students, and in the six decades since they left Saint John's, Mr. White never envisioned himself as a "Founder" but now sees himself as one of a vibrant community of Pioneers, who continue to influence future generations of Saint John's every day.

Saint John's High School has grown and strengthened over the past 120 years because of the individuals whose commitment to students and dedication to keeping the Xaverian mission and values alive. Mr. White is a testament to the indelible influence of the Brothers who taught him, the 99 classmates from 1960, and the thousands of students he taught and players he coached over the years.
