Pioneers reminisce on Temple Street lunch tradition

To honor a staple of Saint John's past, students got a taste of Temple Street with a lunchtime hot dog truck.
Back when Saint John's was on Temple Street in Worcester, there was no cafeteria and students had the choice of eating in the gym or out on the blacktop next to the school building. Out on the pavement, Mike's Lunnch Truck would roll in and serve the students lined up outside "two dogs loaded and a bag of butter" (two hot dogs with mustard, relish and onions and a bag of popcorn). On Fridays, which during the days of Temple Street were days of fasting, Mike would serve hotdog rolls filled with cheese, mustard, and relish.

Alum Bill Mackie is pictured here in 1953 and 2015 grabbing lunch outside Saint John's High School.

In honor of Temple Street, and as part of the Founders Hall Building Dedication week, SJ recreated Mike's all-weather lunches for today's Pioneers when the Godfather truck pulled up to serve the 1,000 students of today.

Earlier in the week, students had the opportunity to hear the story of the Temple Street experience from alumnus and former teacher and coach Bill White '60. On Friday, October 2, the official dedication of Founders Hall will occur at the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit.
