The World Language Department believes that the study of a second language is essential to the development of the whole person. As we educate young men for life in the twenty-first century, it is essential that they be infused with an awareness of the cultural, linguistic and sociological diversity that will provide them a sensitivity to co-exist successfully in a multi-ethnic society.
In responding to our role as educators in the Xaverian tradition, the department offers a program that balances proficiency and precision of language with respect and an appreciation for the cultures of those peoples whose languages we study. By the time he is graduated, a student who has completed all four years will have acquired a strong level of proficiency in a second language so that he may be, in Napoleon’s dictum, “worth another person.”
