Saint John's Cycling Club
The Saint John’s Cycling Club provides and activity in which students can develop lifelong attitudes towards good physical and mental fitness. The Cycling Club, directed by faculty member Mr. Michael Novick, conducts what is arguably one of the best possible aerobic workouts, in a safe but challenging way, after classes three times a week.
On Mondays and Wednesdays, the club may ride between 15 and 30 miles. On Fridays, the club conducts a more relaxed ride, generally distancing less than 10 miles. In each case, the members of the club ride a group. This group allows students to create close ties of trust between members.
During some rides, the group practices pace line formations. In these instances, each member of the group takes a turn “breaking the air” for the other riders in the group. In these cases, the group takes on the identity of a team, as the rider that previously led the group falls back to draft off of the other members and rest.
Club Cycling combines academics into a real life setting, as it ties together physics and health/ human body sciences. By the end of the day, member of the cycling club will often leave the school with a sense of personal accomplishment and service to the group. Cycling Club helps develop healthy practices that students can take with them for the rest of their lives.
