COURSE DESCRIPTION This is a intermediate level course in Modern Standard Chinese ( Mandarin).  .  In this course, you will improve your Chinese skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and will make significant gains in the acquisition of vocabulary and grammar.  Classroom exercises will allow students to practice in communicative situations.  Because of the accelerated pace of this course, you must commit yourself to daily preparation and active participation.  Time, discipline and commitment are required to succeed in this class. 

 
Specific objectives are:
Listening:   Able to understand daily conversation, can communicate with others with some help.  Speech is clear.

Speaking: Emerging ability to make longer statements and ask multiple questions using the standard pronunciation and in a culturally appropriate way, able to use learned vocabulary and grammatical rules. 

Reading: Can read on 500 character level with more complicated grammar.

Writing: Able to write (hand writing, and computer input) letters and descriptive paragraphs using the characters learned.

ASSESSMENT METHODS AND GRADING POLICIES
Students final grades will be based on (1) objective scores they accumulate during the course and (2) the instructors’ evaluation of the students performance, participation, progress and efforts.
The objective scores will be calculated on the basis of the following components:
Homework 20%
Quizzes and Tests 60%
Participation 10%
Recitation (all-inclusive) 10%

MAKEUP AND HELP METHODS

You have up to one week to makeup the missing assignments due to an excused absence. Any work not submitted within the week will result in "no credit".  Make appointment with the teacher for extra help.

 Homework

Homework must be turned in on the due day.  Homework is always due at the beginning of class.  Homework turned in at the end of class is not accepted.  No late homework will be accepted.  Paragraphs writing require at least 100 characters.  Please staple multiple pages together, standard size paper only.  Please double space if you turn in homework on ruled 81/2 by 11 sheet of paper.

Grading standard on homework:  Legible Chinese characters, grammar patterns.  


Study Guidelines:
  1. Vocabulary
      a. be able to say the words and write down the Pinyin and

      b. know how to use the words in longer phrases and sentences.
 2. Dialogue/lesson
      a. read character text in correct tone and intonation,
      b. know the meaning,
      c. be able to translate between Chinese and English.
 3. Grammar and sentence patterns
      a. understand the points illustrated,
      b. be able to do all the exercises.
 4. Characters
      a. recognizes the characters, pronounce them correctly and know the     meaning,
      b. write (not copy) them correctly in the right stroke order,
      c. use them in a phrase or a sentence
      d. able to use computer to input characters.
