SJMUN Conference at UCONN

This past weekend, twenty-four Saint John’s Model United Nations students along with faculty moderators Mr. Abdella ‘92, Dr. McClintock P’25, and Mr. Favulli travelled to Storrs, Connecticut for UConn’s conference (UCMUN). With Brown University’s conference remaining virtual this fall, club President Aarush Sheth ’22 and his team spearheaded a return to in-person MUN by pivoting to UCMUN for 2021. It was the first National Conference SJMUN has attended since we returned from the University of Chicago conference in February 2020.

SJMUN left school on Friday on a bus chartered by Foxy Travel/FTI Lines, owned by the Menard family, whose two sons are SJ alumni. To open our National Conference season, we had our traditional Team Lunch at the Artisanal Burger Company. Over the course of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, topics that were discussed ranged from the Melting of the Ice Caps, to the Yemen Crisis, Girls’ Education, and even a historical crisis set in the 15th century. Thankfully, resolutions were passed in each committee. While one does not “win” Model United Nations, special commendation goes to five delegates who earned awards for their professionalism and mastery in committee. Congratulations to Peter Stamoulis ‘22, Jack Albright ‘22, Tom Lane ‘22, James Kasrawi ‘23, and Justin Dorval ‘23. SJMUN is deeply grateful to Saint John’s for their support of our endeavors, especially in these challenging times.

Our next big event is our return to the University of Chicago conference in February 2022. You can follow our exploits on Twitter @sjmun.
