SJMUNC XXXV

SJMUNC XXXV
By Rohil Mohan ‘24

Saint John’s Model UN held the 35th annual SJMUNC this past Saturday, October 22, 2022. SJMUNC XXXV convened with over 300 delegates from 20 different schools for a day of intense and exhilarating debate: and was a resounding success. The day started with a profound address from Co-Secretary-General George Giannopoulos ‘23 relating the interpersonal skills of MUN to his father’s experience in America as a Greek immigrant.

With this speech in mind, delegates flew into action in a variety of committees ranging from a triple-joint crisis featuring the Persian, Spartan, and Athenian armies, to the United States Senate debating universal healthcare and healthcare reform, to the Clone Wars Council on droid rights. After a few hours of debate, delegates enjoyed a delicious lunch graciously catered by Garden Fresh of Worcester, owned and operated by SJ alumni Dean Stamoulis ‘89 and Todd Stamoulis ‘92. Fed and watered, delegates flew right back into action, and resolutions passed in every committee. Co-Secretary-General Justin Dorval gaveled the day to a close, marking the end of a successful conference. Special shoutout to senior Kyle Fischesser ‘23 on his victory as Queen of Westeros!  Mr. Don Franke, President of the New England MUN Moderators Association marveled at how SJMUNC always restores his hope for MUN at the beginning of every school year.  We are humbled by this observation by such a titan of the MUN world.

SJMUN would like to extend sincere thanks to our Secretaries-General George Giannopoulos and Justin Dorval ‘23 who put countless hours into this conference and were invaluable to the success of the day. In addition, we are grateful for the efforts of our faculty moderators Mr. Chuck Abdella ‘92, Dr. Russ McClintock P’25, and Mr. Ben Lizotte ‘89 who spent hours planning SJMUNC and donated their Saturday to ensure its success. Finally, our thanks to all those who participated in the conference: we could not have done it without you.
