Saint John's Announces New Head Varsity Football Coach

It is with great excitement that, after a nation-wide search Saint John's High School announces the appointment of John Vassar as its Head Varsity Football Coach effective immediately. In addition, Vassar will serve as the School's first Director of Community Outreach and Partnerships starting July 1, 2023.

Vassar, a Worcester native, graduated from Saint John’s High School in 2011 and has been a proud alumnus and true representation of the Saint John’s community ever since. During his time at Saint John’s High School, Vassar was a successful student-athlete who, after graduating from Saint John's, attended Wesleyan University where he continued his football career and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics. In his professional career, he has held coaching positions at Doherty High School and Saint Paul’s in Worcester, before joining the coaching staff at Saint John’s in 2022, the SJ community witnessed firsthand the instrumental mentorship he provided to the players and how he helped to improve the overall team performance. He is currently the Regional Director of Legacy New England Football Organization, a New England Region-Wide football league which provides unique on and off the field developmental platforms for youth to college student-athletes as well as professional athletes.

"Making connections, building community and youth development is a passion of mine,” says Vassar. “The Saint John's community is a major piece of the foundation that made me who I am today. It's an honor to be able to bring it all home and give it back to our young men. It takes a village to raise a child. I look forward to doing my part in strengthening and growing our village both on and off the football field."

In addition to accepting the position of Head Coach, Vassar will also serve as the School's first Director of Community Outreach and Partnerships - forging deeper relationships with the greater community and working to instill a sense of enthusiasm and awareness for our prospective families and students. He will also work closely with our alumni community and local businesses and organizations to bring internship and job opportunities to our current students.

“Vassar’s dedication to the Saint John’s mission and our greater community impressed the entire committee,” says Headmaster Alex Zequeira. “In addition to our excitement to welcome him as Head Coach of our Football program, we very much look forward to his work as our first Director of Community Outreach and Partnerships. As Saint John’s enters its 125th year, our strategic focus will, in part, be to add new and exciting ways to share the Saint John’s story with the community. I have no doubt that John will be a great ambassador for us both on and off the field.”

"Vassar is an outstanding choice to lead the Saint John’s football program,” says former Head Coach, John Andreoli. “Vassar is a proven leader, mentor, and outstanding role model for the student-athletes. He has an outstanding leadership skill set, excellent communication skills and a high energy approach to the game - all of which are a strong foundation for a successful head coaching career in the Catholic Conference at Saint John’s. I’m very proud of John as a person and professional and wish him great success in his new role,” Andreoli concludes.

“We are thrilled to welcome John Vassar back to Saint John’s as our next Varsity Football Coach,” says Michael Mead, Saint John’s Athletic Director. “John will build and maintain a program that continues to support Saint John's Mission and he will be a tremendous asset to our players and our community.”
