Powerlifting team places second at Nationals

Congratulations to student-athletes for an incredible performance at the National Powerlifting meet.

In March, the Powerlifting Team from Saint John’s High School competed in the Raw Division of the High School National Powerlifting meet, sanctioned by USA Powerlifting, held in Scranton, PA.

After 2.5 days of lifting Saint John’s emerged with the 2nd place team trophy in the inaugural year that Raw and Equipped Divisions were showcased as part of the same meet, which drew almost 500 high school lifters.

The Raw Division requires that lifters only wear supportive equipment limited to a singlet, knee sleeves, wrist wraps and belt, as opposed to the knee wraps and single-ply supportive squat suits and bench shirts, used in the Equipped Division.

While all lifter achieved personal records, the top scorers for the Saint John’s team were junior Ryan Kelly, who took 4th place in the 198 pound weight class, junior Federico Ernst, who claimed the silver medal in the 275+ weight class and senior Jonathan Lee, who took home the bronze in the 148 pound weight class.
