Students learn while traveling this summer

Classes and clubs have brought students to three continents this summer!

The study of world languages at Saint John's High School transcends books and exams. During the summer breaks, many students immerse themselves in the culture of the languages they spent the school year studying. This summer, students from Chinese classes, French students, and student musicians traveled to China, Guadeloupe, and Italy.

China

Students practicing their Chinese language skills visited Beijing, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Wuxi, and Shanghai. They encountered the terra cotta warriors, trekked the Great Wall, enjoyed tea on a tea plantation, and even tried out Disney Shanghai!

Guadeloupe

In late June, Monsieur Lizotte accompanied a group of students to Guadeloupe, a French territory in the Caribbean Sea. The students spend mornings in conversation classes, and fill their afternoons with activities from exploring the region to getting to know their hosts. From there, the group works on vocabulary and descriptions about those activities so they can tell their host families about it when they return for dinner at the end of the day.

Italy

In June, students had the unique opportunity to visit Rome. Msgr. Francis Kelly '55 invited the group to Mass - the Canon of Saint Peter's Basilica. Mass was held in the Chapel of the Canons, a private chapel of privilege. A Mass in honor of Saint Peter was celebrated by the group, with a select group of Chorus members providing music for the Mass. Faculty members Mr. Michael Clark and Mr. Richard Monroe led the musicians.
