Eurydice is a contemporary retelling of the classic Greek Myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. While still following the traditional love story of Orpheus’ descent into the underworld to retrieve his new bride, this version is told from the perspective of Eurydice. Additionally, Ruhl has added the character of Eurydice’s father to the story, thus complicating her decision to return to the land of the living with her husband, or stay in the underworld with her father. Eurydice, is a theatrically, thought-provoking story of true love sure to warm the heart and the soul.

Orpheus and Eurydice, two youths, perhaps a little too young and a little too in love, despite not having fully found themselves, have found one another. The joy of young love is quickly cut short by the reality of marriage and the desire for something more. Thus Eurydice embarks on her journey to the underworld where she reunites with her dead father and fights off the advances of a rather overzealous lord. Orpheus, coping with his devastating loss, sets out on a quest to find his love and regain what he has lost. Orpheus does make it to the underworld, but with so many options and decisions to be made, can love conquer death, can reality overpower memory and is it ever even possible to retain what we hold most dear.
