Congratulations to the Saint John's Cross Country Team for a very successful 2017 season. 

St. John’s Finishes 6th in Nike NXN Northeast Regional Results HERE

The St. John’s Cross Country team traveled to Wappinger Falls, NY this weekend to compete in the Nike Cross Nationals Northeast Regional meet.
Coming off a brilliant effort at last week’s All State Meet where they captured their first All State Cross Country Championship, the Pioneers finished 6th out of nearly 40 of the top teams in the northeast.

Again, like they have done all year, senior’s Josh Rahn (5th) and co-captain, Patrick Creamer(6th) led the way, delivering the “low stick” numbers finishing in 16:18.3 and 16:21.9 respectively over the very hilly and challenging Bowdoin Park 5k course.

Finishing 3rd for the Pioneers was senior co-captain, Joe Walsh (74th) in a time of 17:17.9 closely followed by fellow senior’s Thomas Goodhue (77th) in 17:19.0 and Mitch Witt (90th) in17:26.4.

Rounding out the top 7 for St. John’s was senior Tyler Griffin (106th) in 17:33.7 and junior Dominic Mastromatteo 115th in 17:38.0.

With this the final meet of a very successful season, the harriers will take some time off over the next couple of weeks to rest, recover and re-energize from a grueling season and begin to set their sights on the indoor track season.

St. John’s Captures First All State D1 Cross Country Championship
(November 18, 2017) Results HERE
On a cool, overcast November day with muddy conditions on a rolling course, the Pioneers secured their first ever All State Cross Country Championship with a convincing 23-point win over a very tough Lowell High School team.

Running with confidence, in a controlled and measured manner, the harriers were patient throughout the first half of the race, running close to the front but in tight groups just off the pace of the leaders and like they have done so often throughout the season, they closed like champions!
Leading the way and running together up front for the Pioneers while finishing with “low stick” positions good for4th and 5th place was senior co-captain, Pat Craemer and senior Josh Rahn in 15:48.35 and 15:52.28 respectively.

Running strong as the #3 man for the Pioneers was senior co-captain, Joe Walsh who closed incredibly hard over the last mile in a time of 16:12.58 in 20th place while holding off 2 Lowell runners who were in hot pursuit at the finish line.

Rounding out the scoring for the harriers while running together and building intensity over the last mile and finishing 15 seconds and 29 places ahead of Lowell’s 5th man was senior Tyler Griffin in 39th place (16:29.32) and junior Dominic Mastromatteo in 40th place (16:31).

Moving up significantly over the last mile were seniors Mitchell Witt who ran a personal best 16:32.49, good for 44th place and Tom Goodhue in 67th place in a time of 16:45.24. They, too, contributed to the win by positioning themselves well ahead of Lowell’s 5th man.

The Pioneers will be traveling to Fishkill, NY over the Thanksgiving break to run in the Nike Northeast NXN Regional Championships on Saturday, November 25 with hopes of qualifying for the National Championships in Portland, Oregon the following week. 

Pioneers Dominate in MIAA Central Cross-Country Championship Results HERE

On Saturday afternoon, the St. John’s cross-country team traveled to Gardner to defend their district title for the 7th consecutive year on the hilly Gardner Municipal Golf Course.

The harriers totally dominated the field placing all (7) runners in the top 10 while posting a record low 18 points, easily outdistancing Wachusett Regional High School by 66 points for the title.

Running within themselves and displaying strong “pack” running were seniors Josh Rahn and Pat Craemer and junior Dominic Mastromatteo, finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd with Rahn taking the win in 16:29.

Close behind and rounding out the scoring were seniors Tom Goodhue in 5th place (17:08) and Tyler Griffin in 7th place (17:15).

Running strong throughout were seniors Mitch Witt and Joe Walsh finishing 9th and 10th respectively in 17:18 and 17:19.

While winning their district race, the Pioneers qualified for the All State Championships to be held next Saturday, November 18 at 11:40AM at the Wrentham Developmental Center in Wrentham MA.

St. John’s Wins Bob McIntyre Twilight Cross-Country Invitational Results Here

Again, while displaying strong team running and closing hard over the last mile, the Pioneers battled the defending state champion Wellesley Red Raiders to a 16 point win scoring 93 points in a tightly fought contest.

Under the lights on the super-fast Barnstable Fairgrounds 5k course, co-captain Patrick Craemer led the Pioneers earning a podium visit, finishing 3rd, in a personal best time of 15:42.00. Fellow senior, Josh Rahn ran yet another strong race finishing 14th in 15:53.4, while co-captain Joe Walsh, for the second straight week, dipped under the magic 16:00 mark placing 16th in 15:57.8.

Rounding out the scoring for the harriers were junior Dominic Mastromatteo in a career best 16:14.6 for a 24th place finish and senior Tyler Griffin in 37th place for another personal best in 16:29.6.

In the Grade 10 race, the Pioneers also took the team title with an impressive 73 point tally easily outdistancing King Philip Regional High school by 56 points. Running in a pack, the Pioneer “super- sophs” placed their top five scorers all within 20 seconds with Ben Morris leading the charge for an 11th place finish in 17:21.8. Both Jeff Secrist and Connor Whitney placed 14th and 17th, running personal bests in 17:24.2 and 17:26.6 respectively. Rounding out the scoring for the thin clads with more personal best times were Tim Walsh in 22nd place in 17:40.1 and Andrew Bird in 24th place in 17:41.4.

In the Division 1 JV Race, junior John Sullivan ran to a strong 10 place finish in a personal best, 17:20.0 while junior Matt Catarius was close behind in 15th place in yet another personal best of 17:25.0. Running sub 18 minutes for the first time were juniors Matthew Jennings in 33rd place in a time of 17:54.7 and Dante Maglitta in 37th place in 17:57.2. Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers in the JV contest was junior Michael Hayeck with an impressive 18:30.4 performance. These performances all contributed to a 6th place finish for St. John’s out of 47 teams.

Finally, in the Freshmen 2.1 mile race, kudos go out to Padraig Vona who finished in 11:40.0, good for 17th place showing, followed closely by Dylan Joerres in 21st place in in 11:44.0. Rounding out the scoring for the freshmen Pioneers were Matt Black in 12:56.4, Noah Long in 13:11.7 and Trevor Brooks in 13:23.5
St. John’s next contest will be the MSTCA Frank Mooney Coaches XC Invitational on Saturday, November 4th at the Wrentham Developmental Center.

St. John’s wins the Bay State Invitational Results HERE
On Saturday morning the St. John’s Pioneers traveled to Wrentham to race in the Bay State Invitational, the site of this year’s state championship course.

Showcasing tight team running while closing hard, the harriers easily outpaced the field scoring 36 points, well ahead of their nearest competitor, Marshfield High School.

Senior Josh Rahn led the way taking top honors with the fastest winning time of the day in 15:41.53 over the rolling and spectator friendly 5k course.

Fellow senior co-captains, Patrick Craemer and Joe Walsh followed close behind in 2nd and 3rd place while also dipping under 16 minutes, running 15:49.53 and 15:47.88 respectively.

Debuting in in his first race after battling back from an early season injury, junior Dominic Mastromatteo displayed lots of grit in finishing 13th overall in 16:37.9.

Rounding out the scoring for the thin clads was senior Tyler Griffin 17th place in 16:42.

St. John’s vs. Shrewsbury High School Cross Country Meet. (Thursday, October 5, 2017)

This afternoon, while playing host to cross town rival Shrewsbury High School, the Pioneers easily outdistanced the Colonials by a score of 20-40.

Running together and displaying strong “pack” running, the Pioneer thin clads placed their top 6 runners in the top 7 places.
Winning the race was Shrewsbury’s Andrew Kaye in 17:17.7.

Running smoothly and all finishing together in 17:39 were senior co-captains Patrick Craemer and Joe Walsh along with senior Josh Rahn. Following close behind and finishing 5th overall was senior Tyler Griffin in 17:42. Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers was senior Mitchell Witt in 6th place in 18:11 while senior Tom Goodhue finished 7th in 18:25.

In JV action, senior Cedric Fahey took home top honors winning in 21:11.9.

The harriers have completed their dual meet season with a 5-0 record.

St. John’s next meet will be the Bay State Invitational on Saturday, October 14 at the Wrentham Developmental Center in Wrentham, MA.

St. John’s/Doherty Memorial High School Cross Country Meet 9/26/17

Tuesday afternoon under steamy conditions over a hilly 3.0 mile course at Newton Hill Park, t he St. John’s Pioneers outpaced the Doherty Memorial High School Highlanders (23 – 38).
Winning the race for the Pioneers with a strong closing kick was sophomore, Matt Catarius in 18:25. Freshman, Padraig Vona finished 4th in 18:55 while junior, Dante Maglitta ran a strong race, finishing 5th in 18:58. Rounding out the scoring and finishing close behind was freshman, Dylan Joerres in 6th place in 19:02 and junior, John Sullivan in 7th place in 19:02.
Sophomore, Andrew Bird placed 8th in 19:22 and Michael Hayeck finished in 9th place in 19:25, with St. John’s placing their top 7 runners in the top 9 places.

The Pioneers have improved their dual meet record to 4-0 and will be travelling to Holden, MA on Saturday morning, September 30th to compete in the Wachusett Invitational.

Recap of Bowdoin Park Cross Country Classic & Ocean State Invitational (September 23, 2017)
While splitting their squad this weekend, the St. John’s Cross Country team successfully competed in two prominent northeast region high school cross country invitationals.

At the Bowdoin Park Cross Country Classic in Wappinger Falls, New York, the Pioneers captured first place in the Varsity D2 race with 53 points, easily outdistancing runner up Smithtown High School from Long Island with 104 points.

With a strong front running pack strategy and a series of fast closing miles by each runner, the harriers placed their top 5 scorers in the top 24 places to secure the victory.
Leading the way for the thin clads was senior, Josh Rahn in 2nd place (16:36.9), followed by senior co-captains, Patrick Craemer in 4th place (16:52.6) and Joe Walsh in 6th place (16:57.3). Rounding out the scoring for St. John’s was Mitch Witt in 17th place (17:26.3) and senior Tyler Griffin in 24th place (17:35.4). Both senior, Tom Goodhue and sophomore, Ben Morris finished in 57th and 60th place with times of 18:19.1 and 18:25.7, respectively.

At the Ocean State Invitational at Goddard Park in Warwick, RI, the Pioneers competed in the Varsity, JV and freshmen races.
In the Varsity race, displaying tight team running, St. John’s placed their 7 runners all within 30 seconds. Leading the way for the Pioneers was sophomore, Jeff Secrist in 18:05, followed by junior, Matt Catarius (18:15), junior, John Sullivan (18:25), sophomore, Connor Whitney (18:29), junior, Dante Maglitta (18:31), junior Matt Jennings (18:35) and sophomore, Tim Walsh (18:35). St. John’s scored 385 points finishing 14th out of 30 teams.

Top finisher in the JV race was sophomore, Andrew Bird in 19:00.

In the Freshmen 4k race, Padraig Vona was the top Pioneer finishing in 14:46 followed by Dylan Joerres in 14:57. The freshmen team finished 11th out of 22 teams.
St. John’s will travel to Doherty High School in Worcester for their next meet on Tuesday, September 26 @ 3:30PM.

Cross Country Big Wave Invitational Results Here
In the Freshmen/Sophomore race, 9th grader, Padraig Vona was the first Pioneer across the line in 9th place in 14:19.28.  He was followed by fellow classmate and freshman, Dylan Joerres in 18th place in a time of 14:45.39. Sophomore, Time Walsh was the 3rd St. John’s runner across the line in 20th place in 14:54.04. Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers were sophomore, Andrew Bird (21st) in 15:01.15 and freshman, Matthew Black (55th ) in 16:19.29.   The Pioneer Freshmen/Sophomore team finished 5th out of 13 teams with 117 points.
In the Junior/Senior contest, junior, Michael Hayeck was first across the line in 52nd place in 15:37.13. Seniors Cedric Fahey and Michael Keohane finished close behind in 56th and 58th place with times of 15:44.96 and 15:57.46 respectively. Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers were junior Kevin Spiegelman in 61st place in 16:01.71 and senior Sean Curley in 75th place in 16:55.   The St. John’s Junior/Senior team finished 9th out of 12 teams with 236 points.

CMC Championship Cross Country Meet (9/11/17)
Yesterday, the St. John’s Pioneers hosted the annual Central Mass Conference meet. Under ideal conditions and a definite home course advantage, the harriers exhibited impressive team running, placing 5 runners in the top 6 spots for a low 17 point total while easily outdistancing rivals St. Peter Marian with 55 points and Holy Name High School with 66 points. 
Leading the way for the Pioneer thin clads was junior Matthew Catarius, winning in a time of 19.33.9. He was followed by junior John Sullivan in 2nd place in a time of 19:53 and freshman, Padraig Vona in 3rd place in 19:57. Rounding out the scoring for St. John’s with a strong finish was sophomore, Connor Whitney in 5th place in 20:22 and junior Dante Maglitta in 6th place in 20:34.
In the JV Race, Sam Sziklas took top honors winning in 22:36.8
The Pioneers’ next race will be the Big Wave Invitational in Lakeville MA on Saturday, September 16.

St. John’s vs. WRHS XC Meet Tuesday 9/5/17

The St. John’s Harriers opened their cross-country season with a decisive win 17 to 38 over Wachusett Regional High School yesterday at the Mountaineer’s scenic 5k home course.
The Pioneers placed their top 5 runners in the top 6 positions with senior, Josh Rahn winning in 16:49.
Rahn was followed by senior co-captains, Joe Walsh and Pat Craemer finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in 17:00 and 17:12.
Rounding out the scoring were seniors Tyler Griffin in 5th place in 17:35 and Mitch Witt in 6th place in 18:09.
In the JV race, the Mountaineers squeaked out the win 24 to 31 but Pioneer freshman showed their grit with Padraig Vona finishing 3rd in 19:53 while fellow freshman, Dylan Joerres finishing 4th in 20:00. Rounding out the scoring, were juniors Matt Jennings in 7th place in 20:35, Dante Maglitta in 8th place in 20:37 and Mike Hayek in 9th place in 20:57.
The Pioneers next meet is the Central Mass Conference meet hosted at St. John’s on Monday, September 11 at 3:30PM.
