Pioneers win 9th straight Central MA XC District Championships

Under a clear, cool and bright blue sky at Stanley Park in Westfield MA, the St. John’s XC Team ran as a TEAM and once again while defending their District 1 Central MA title, easily outdistancing arch rival Wachusett Regional High School by 20 points.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was junior, Ben Morris, who ran a competitive race and closed hard over the final stages to finish 2
nd overall in a time of 16:33. Ben was followed closely by senior co-captain, Dominic Mastromatteo in 4th place in 16:37.
Leading the charge in the mid pack was junior, Jeff Secrist, finishing 11th in 16:51, followed closely by senior, Matt Catarius in 12th place in a time of 16:54.

Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers was junior, Tim Walsh with a strong 27
th showing in17:18.    

The Pioneer’s next meet be the All State XC Meet where they will defend their State Championship on Sunday, November 18 at Stanley Park.
 

Pioneers Run Strong at Twilight Meet

At Saturday evenings race under the lights at the Barnstable Fairgrounds, on a fast and comfortable night the St. John’s Pioneers turned in many respectable performances in all their races.

In the highly competitive Varsity D1 race, the Pioneers finished 8
th out of 40 teams.
Leading the way for the thin clads was senior co-captain, Dominic Mastromatteo who ran a personal best over the 5k distance to finish 22nd in a time of 16:09.41. Next across the line in a gutsy performance, after having missed the last 3 weeks of training due to an Achilles injury was junior, Ben Morris in a personal best of 16:28. Close behind was junior, Jeff Secrist in a personal best of 16:30.

Rounding out the scoring with personal bests was senior, Matt Catarius in 16:45 and junior, Connor Whitney in 17:03.

In the D1 10
th grade race the, the Pioneers were led by sophomore, Padraig Vona who finished 10th in a personal best time of 17:10. He was followed by fellow sophomores, Dylan Joerres and Connor Gothorpe with times of 18:01 and 18:02 respectively. With freshmen, Chase Whitney moving up to the 5k distance and competing with the grade 10 team, he was the 4th scorer with a personal best time of 18:15!

In the JV contest, senior Dante Maglitta was the top finisher for the Pioneers with a time of 18:11, followed by senior Michael Hayeck in 18:11 and senior Matt Jennings in 18:13.  
In the Freshman 2.1-mile race, Brody Massad was the top finisher across the line in 12:48 followed closely by Justin Rusak in 12:58 and David Rowe in 13:34.

The Pioneers next meet is Monday, October 29 @ 3:30PM when they will be hosting the Doherty Highlanders at our home course.
 

Pioneers race well at Bay State Invitational

On Saturday the St. John’s cross-country team traveled to Northfield MA to compete in the Bay State Invitational at Northfield Mountain, the site of this year’s upcoming state cross-country championship.
On a hilly, muddy and wet course the Pioneers ran a respectable race, finishing 4th overall with 144 points, behind Wellesley, Franklin and Wakefield-- some of the state’s best teams.
Leading the way for the St. John’s harriers was senior co-captain Dominic Mastromatteo in 16th place in a time of 17:24.8, followed closely by junior, Jeffrey Secrist with a strong 25th place showing in 17:32.

Senior Matthew Catarius continued to compete well, running strong throughout the race with a 28
th place finish and a 17:40 clocking.

Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers was sophomore Padraig Vona in 45
th place (18:07), followed by junior Connor Whitney in 53rd place in a time of 18:18.

The team will travel to the Barnstable Fairgrounds next Saturday, October 20 for the annual Twilight Invitational to be held under the lights on a fast and flat course.
 


Pioneers Finish 4th at Wachusett Invitational

The St. John’s Cross-Country team turned in a strong performance on Saturday morning at the Wachusett Invitational. Despite missing some of their top runners due to SATs and injuries, the Pioneers rallied for a very respectable 4
th place showing, totaling 78 points.

Leading the way for the thin clads was junior, Jeffrey Secrist with a 9
th place finish in a season best 17:24 over the 5k distance. Finishing 10 seconds back in 10th place in a time of 17:34 was senior, Matt Catarius.  Next to cross the line was junior Tim Walsh who finished in 16th place in a time of 17:45.

Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers was junior Connor Whitney in 20
th place (18:06) and senior Dante Maglitta in 23rd place (18:25)

In the JV contest, junior Matt Jennings ran a strong and measured race, finishing 8
th in a time of 19:01.

In the Freshman race, Chase Whitney, again proved to be the team’s top performer with a 6
th place finish in a time of 19:18.
St. John’s next race will be this Saturday, October 13 at the Bay State Invitational out in Northfield MA at Northfield Mountain, the site of this year’s all state cross country championships.  
 
Pioneers win a close one over cross-town rivals Shrewsbury High School

On Friday, the St. John’s harriers traveled to Shrewsbury High School for what is always a competitive XC meet. This year was no exception.
In a closely contested race, the Pioneers eked out a victory over a tough Shrewsbury squad 27-28.

Winning the race and easily outdistancing the field by close to a minute over the treacherous 2.92 mile course was senior co-captain, Dominic Mastromatteo in a time of 15: 59.5.
Running the race of his life and “taking no prisoners” was senior Matt Catarius who finished in 4th place in 17:08 followed by a solid performance of junior Jeff Secrist in 5th place in a time of 17:14.

Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers with a strong 8
th place finish was junior Tim Walsh in 17:21, while senior John Sullivan battled over the last 100m in nearly a photo finish to take 9th in 17:23 to secure the victory for the Pioneer thin clads.    

In the JV contest, despite losing 23-32, sophomore, Dylan Joerres was the top scorer, finishing in 2
nd place in a time of 18:42, followed closely by senior Michael Terekhov in 4th place in 18:44. Junior Sam Sziklas was the third Pioneer scorer in 7th place in 19:24, while juniors Joe Bafaro (19:42) and Evan Wynn (19:49) rounded out the scoring for the JV squad.  

With a 3-1 record overall, the Pioneers will compete next meet at the Wachusett Invitational on Saturday, October 6 at WRHS.
 
Pioneers Compete at Ocean State Invitational

On Saturday the St. John’s Cross-Country team travelled to Goddard Park in Warwick, RI to compete in the Ocean State Invitational Cross-Country meet.

With the Varsity, competing in the Championship Race against some of the best high school teams in the Northeast, St. Johns finished 7th overall with a total of 158 points.
Leading the way for the harriers over the 5k course and finishing in 22nd place was senior co-captain, Dominic Mastromatteo in a time of 17:04.6.

Following close behind were the junior duo of Ben Morris (23rd) in 17:10 and Jeff Secrist (29th) in 17:23.
Rounding out the scoring for the varsity was senior, Matt Catarius (40th) in 17:50 and sophomore, Padraig Vona (44th) in 18:02.

In the JV race with over 400 runners competing, junior, Connor Whitney ran a strong and measured race, finishing 22nd in a time of 18:16.06.
In the freshmen race, Chase Whitney was the top Pioneer finisher in 17th place with a time of 14:42.84 over the 2.5-mile course.

Next on the schedule, the Pioneers will face cross town rival Shrewsbury High School on Friday, September 28.


Big Wave Invitational at Apponequet High School.   In the Freshman/Sophomore race, freshman, Chase Whitney covered the 2.5 mile distance leading all his teammates in a time of 14:46.06 to finish 13th. Next in for the Pioneers was sophomore, Dylan Joerres, in 17th place in a time of 15:01.16, followed by sophomore Connor Gothorpe in 20th place with a time of 15:05.5. Rounding out the scoring for harriers was sophomore Jackson Andrews in 25th place in a time of 15:24.9 and freshman, Brody Massad in in 38th place with a time of 15:43.8.  The St. John’s freshmen/sophomore squad finished 4th overall out of 13 teams with a total of 96 points.  In the junior/senior contest, senior, Michael Terekhov was the Pioneer’s top scorer, finishing in 30th place in  a time of 15:02. Next to finish was junior, Joe Bafaro  (53rd) in 15:46.2, followed by fellow classmate, Sam Sziklas (60th) in 16:02.86. Rounding out the scoring was junior, Austin Muzzy (66th) in 16:33.5 and junior, Xavier Morales (68th) in 16:38.7.   Click here  for results.  


Pioneer Harriers Win CMC League Championship

In rainy conditions on a wet and slippery home course, the St. John’s thin clads ran to a convincing win over rivals SPM and HN to capture the CMC League Championship.
St. Johns’ posted 19 points followed by SPM with 46 points and HN with 78 points.

Leading the way for the Pioneers was senior co-captain, Michael Hayeck with a winning time of 19:10.6.
Finishing 3rd was junior Connor Whitney in 19:31.
Rounding out the top (5) scorers were sophomore, Connor Gothorpe in 4th place (20:08), senior, Dante Maglitta in 5th place (20:09) and senior, Matt Jennings in 6th place (20:12).

In the JV race, junior, Sam Sziklas captured the win in a time of 21:44.9.

The Pioneers now with a 2-1 record will travel to Lakeville, MA to run in the Big Wave invitational on Saturday, September 15.
St. John’s next home meet will be Monday, October 29 against Doherty High School.
 

Pioneer harriers open the season with a tough loss to Wachusett!
Despite a tough battle in a very competitive race over a hilly St. John’s 5k course, the Pioneer thin clads succumbed to a season opening loss at the hands of a very talented WRHS team. With Wachusett placing their top 5 runners in the top 8 places, they outpaced St. John’s with a score of 25-30.
Winning the race for the Mountaineers was Isaac Steele in a time of 17:39.7.
Finishing 2nd was senior co-captain, Dominic Mastromatteo in 17:46 followed by junior Ben Morris in 18:15. Running a strong race and finishing 6th overall was sophomore, Padraig Vona in 18:41.
Rounding out the top 5 scorers for St. Johns were senior Matt Catarius in 9th place in 18:59, followed closely by junior Tim Walsh in 10th place in 19:07.
In the JV race, the Pioneers lost to the Mountaineers by a score of 21-36 with sophomore Dylan Joerres being the top St. John’s finisher in 2nd place in a time of 20:10.
The St. John’s XC team’s next race is this Monday (9/10) where they will host the CML Championships against St. Peter Marian, Holy Name and Notre Dame at 3:30PM.
