Father Felix Varela
February 24th
Good morning, Saint John’s students, faculty, and staff. Let us pause in our day to pray with Father Felix Varela, who died on this day in 1853.
We pray for Cuba, Father Varela’s home, and for liberty of all people, which he worked tirelessly for until he died.
-pause-
In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Merciful God, we pray to you on behalf of those who do not control their own destiny, and in thanksgiving for our immense freedom.
We thank you for the example of Father Varela, who spent his life working for immigrants and for social change, and we remember your words, that ‘where the Spirit is, there is liberty.’
Amen.
