Chris Herren to speak at Saint John's on October 5
As part of its ongoing commitment to the health, wellness, and education of its student body and school community, Saint John’s High School will welcome former NBA star and motivational speaker Chris Herren, to campus for a series of events that will occur on Thursday, October 5.
Beginning with a school-wide assembly, Chris will share his personal story of addiction with the Saint John’s student body. Specifically designed for student and community assemblies, Chris will share video highlights of his basketball career and journey to sobriety with his adolescent audience. Chris will touch on such topics as drunk driving, gateway drugs, peer pressure, and bullying and cutting.
The day will conclude with a special presentation of
Rebound: The Chris Herren Story. This evening event will be free and open to the public.
In this very personal talk, Chris will share his story in a brutally honest format. From growing up in Fall River, MA to playing Division 1 basketball and in the NBA, he will take the audience on his journey from addiction to sobriety. Additionally, he will relate his story to the audience addressing themes of gateway drugs, prescription drug abuse, drinking and driving, as well as self-harm. To conclude the event; Chris will field questions from the audience.
Upon reflecting on Herren’s upcoming visit to Saint John’s, Michael Nicholson, Assistant Principal of Student Life, remarks, “Chris’ commitment to sharing his personal struggle with addiction is a powerful testimony for own community and speaks to Saint John’s continued efforts in educating our young men on issues of health, wellness, and adolescent development. Chris helps us fulfill our own mission of fostering the ‘formation of the whole person’.”
