Pioneers come up short in home opener against Xaverian
While hosting their season opener on a partly cloudy, humid mid September afternoon, the St. John’s harriers lost to Xaverian 42-20.
From the gun, against a very deep and talented Xaverian team, the Pioneers struggled to keep up with the Xaverian runners who relentlessly pushed the early pace while taking command of the race.
Despite the fast, early torrid pace, St. John’s senior co-captain, Tommy Robinson emerged and took command midway through the contest, opening up a lead and lengthening it in the last mile to win the race by 14 seconds in a very fast 17:28.6 time over a very hilly and difficult 5k course.
Robinson was followed by his teammate, sophomore Arnav Chatterjee in 19:16.25 who finished 7th and fellow sophomore Luke Depeter in 8th place in a time of 19:36.15.
Rounding out the scoring for the Pioneers were senior Sev Smith in 10th place in a time of 19:39.4 and senior co-captain, Tommy Breeze in 14th place in a time of 20:40.2.
In the freshman contest, St. John’s frosh Jackson Mitchell cruised to victory in a time of 10:26 over the 3k course leading his team to victory 28-29 over a very competitive Xaverian ream.
Following Mitchell was classmate Blake Rice in 4th place in a time of 11:37 followed by fellow Pioneers Patrick Reine in 5th place (12:06.7) and Sean Hoban in 6th place (12:11.7).
Rounding out the scoring for the frosh thinclads was Tyler Horrigan in 12th place in a time of 12:47.
The harriers next meet will be Tuesday, September 19 in Danvers, MA against St. John’s Prep.
