New Principal begins her service

Mrs. Maggie Granados stepped into the role in July.

This month, Margaret Rourke Granados began her tenure as Principal of Saint John's High School. The role was previously filled by Interim Principal Jeanne Depasse.

Her appointment was announced in January, and since she accepted the position she has come to know the far-reaching and depp-rooted Saint John's community. “It’s a powerful and really expansive net the school casts because these young men are really remarkable,” she said in a recent interview with the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.

Headmaster Alex Zequeira and the Board of Trustees announced her appointment in January 2017, and since then Mrs. Granados and her family, husband Stefan and son Will, a freshman, have moved to their new home in Worcester.

She has most recently served at the Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, New Jersey, where she was dean of studies, assistant head of school and head of lower and middle schools. Before that, she was head of school at the Montclair Cooperative School; head of lower school at the Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; and head of lower school at the Berkeley Carroll School in Brooklyn, New York, from 1998 to 2002. Mrs. Granados earned a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Holy Cross in 1988 and a master’s degree in education from Teachers College/Columbia University. Her first teaching job after college was at Our Lady of Angels Elementary School in Worcester. She later taught at Holy Name High School in Worcester and Convent of the Sacred Heart School in New York before moving into administration.

It was during her visits to the school in the winter and spring that she fell in love with the school and its unparalleled community. "I was genuinely inspired by the Saint John’s faculty, parents, and students," she reflected. "It is clear Saint John’s offers its boys a rigorous high school education with varied and valuable experiences in and out of the classroom that cultivate wisdom, character, faith, spirit, and pride.  Resting on the school’s vibrant mission and values, there is a path ahead designed to continue and build upon Saint John’s High School’s long trajectory of success, and I look forward to embracing and leading this collective and collaborative work.”

In her interview with the T&G, Mrs. Granados spoke on how Saint John's High School stands out in educating boys today. “It takes a special place to identify that and become an expert at that. I really believe St. John’s is preparing boys to face and resolve tomorrow’s challenges by inspiring them to be intellectually curious, mindful of the past, equipped with good vision and judgment, knowledge of oneself that comes from spiritual development and all of that becomes the key component to being a successful leader in our complex world.”

Welcome to the Saint John's community!
